Speaking on ETHSeoul on Friday evening, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin suggested that ZK-Rollups will defeat Optimistic Rollups in the long run.
Buterin compared these two solutions and noted that ZK-Rollups is faster in terms of moving funds to and from the mainnet.
Vitalik Buterin believes that although Optimistic Rollups is a more mature technology, the potential of Zero-knowledge Rollups will allow it to displace Optimistic Rollups in the long run.
Optimistic Rollups and ZK-Rollups are layer 2 solutions for scaling Ethereum. Solutions differ in architecture and the level of security they provide.
"My opinion is that in the long run, ZK-Rollups will eventually beat Optimistic Rollups, because they have fundamental advantages, for example, it does not take seven days to withdraw funds," Buterin said. "In 10 years or even more, I expect rollups to basically be completely ZK."
"At the same time, ZK technology is simply difficult to create. There are many problems, especially in doing all this safely and making sure that all the schemes are correct. Optimistic Rollups is just a more mature technology," he said.
Currently, work is underway on the compatibility of EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) for ZK-Rollups. The Layer 2 projects Scroll, zkSync and Polygon have announced plans to introduce the zk-EVM computing environment, which will allow ZK-Rollups to independently launch all types of general-purpose smart contracts.
